Art therapy is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness and achieve insight.
In Colorado an expanding network of art therapists are working as members of treatment teams in hospitals, mental health, and government agencies. For some clients relying on talk therapy alone may be too daunting. Art therapists are able to offer the client’s non-verbal perspective. An art therapist is trained to ask clients questions about their imagery which can then lead to discussions that will clarify issues and hopefully illuminate solutions.
Since 2008, TOSA has offered art therapy for underserved constituents. In addition to its existing artist development and outreach programs, TOSA has provided art therapy for survivors of domestic abuse, refugee youth and, due to the generous support of the Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure, underinsured breast cancer patients. “Art As Therapy” is a wonderful opportunity for community members, artists, and constituents to view the work of local art therapists and educate themselves on this unique arm of the arts community.
